Corn Hybrid Polymer Coating Removal on Delicate Substrates

Project
Number: 06-CR-031

JG-PP is assisting in coordinating the evaluation of using corn based blasting media as a potential process to remove coatings from radomes and other delicate substrates during maintenance, repair and overhaul operations. By consolidating the two Navy and one Army projects into one JG-PP project, JG-PP is able to leverage valuable resources and ensure no duplication of effort in evaluating corn based blasting media. Furthermore, through this coordinated effort, JG-PP can assist in transitioning a cost effective, environmental friendly technical solution for DoD and NASA. Coating removal and selective stripping processes are performed during maintenance, repair and overhaul activities. Navy and Air Force aeronautical radome repair operations currently use solvents (e.g., toluene, xylene, and MEK) that have been targeted for minimization or elimination to remove the coatings. The purpose of this consolidated JG-PP project is to demonstrate and validate the effectiveness of Corn Hybrid Polymer (CHP) blasting technology. CHP is an isolated polycrystalline byproduct material resulting from the commercial processing of corn. It offers an effective alternative to solvent treatment as a means to remove coatings from various composite substrates. An evaluation was conducted on U.S. Navy surface ship radome sections, indicating that this media provides acceptable stripping rate without damage to the surface. This project is targeting NAVAIR and Air Force aeronautical radomes that undergo coating removal evaluation during require routine maintenance and repair service. Other DoD and NASA delicate substrates components will also be evaluated as part of this effort. Several JTPs are planned for development in this effort. A Project Team has been assembled with representatives from the NDCEE, NAVAIR, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, NASA Acquisition Pollution Prevention Office, and a JG-PP representative.
