Solvent Substitution Alternatives
Partnering with JS3WG

JG-PP is partnering with the JS3 Working Group to address solvent substitution alternatives. The JS3WG is an organization that includes representation from all DoD Services and NASA plus technical experts in solvents technology. The JS3WG was established to facilitate open communication, encourage collaboration and promote a well coordinated response to solvent issues related to the upcoming DLSME NESHAP regulations.

The JS3WG, with input from DoD Agencies, derived a methodology tool for establishing the Acceptance Criteria (which includes Materials Compatibility; ESOH; Chemical Properties; and Performance Characteristics) needed for approval and successful implementation of alternative cleaners. This methodology does not identify alternative cleaners, but identifies critical steps necessary for the acceptance of alternative cleaners for DoD industrial maintenance activities.

The JS3 Database was developed to capture all DoD information on solvent substitution. Information includes completed and ongoing efforts, documentation, and most importantly cleaner requirements for specific DoD cleaning operations. This web site will efficiently disseminate data and prevent duplication of efforts DoD wide. In addition, this information is made public so that solvent manufacturers can obtain DoD requirements and solicit their products that meet DoD requirements via the web site. The JS3 database can be accessed from the JG-PP website, or please click here.

The JS3 effort is the joint services commitment to proactively meet anticipated NESHAP compliance requirements through solvent substitution.
