Low-VOC Coatings for Medium
Caliber Ammunition

Project Number: J-98-OC-013

Joint Test Protocol

The JTP , dated April 11, 2000, documents the validation test requirements for coatings applied to medium caliber ammunition projectile bodies for corrosion protection and identification. The validation tests include tests to be performed on coupons coated with the candidate coatings, on projectile bodies coated with the candidate coatings, and on full cartridges incorporating projectile bodies coated with the candidate coatings. Testing includes but is not limited to abrasion resistance, hiding power, adhesion, and salt spray corrosion resistance. Any qualified alternatives will be available for use in place of coatings meeting the existing specifications. The existing specifications for medium caliber ammunition coatings are MIL-E-11195, MIL-E-52891, MIL-L-11195, MIL-L-52043, and TT-E-516.
