Chrome-Free Conversion Coating
(Hughes Missile Systems Company)
Project Number: J-95-OC-001
Completed in 1997

The Chrome-Free Conversion Coating JG-PP project was completed in 1997. HMSC partnered with JG-PP to identify and validate a chromate free conversion coating that could be used on all HMSC production programs. The ease of process implementation (i.e., a "drop in" replacement) was also identified as a goal.

Although traditional chrome conversion coating offers many advantageous coating properties, its use of hexavalent chromium is strictly regulated due to the compound's toxicity and suspected carcinogenicity. The team (contractor and Government) developed a JTP and initiated screening testing of several candidate materials. Testing was stopped when all the potential alternatives failed one of the screening tests. Although no alternative technology was implemented, the project's screening test results and JTP have since been used by other commercial and governmental organizations to evaluate new chemical conversion coatings.

JG-PP continues to stay involved in conversion coating advances, and is a partner on a project led by the NCMS to test new nonchromate conversion coatings.
