Potential Alternatives Report

As part of the HMSC JG-PP project, chromium in chemical conversion coatings was identified as the HazMat of concern, and targeted for elimination or reduction. At the time, HMSC was applying chrome conversion coatings to aluminum surfaces of manufactured tactical missile systems and related defense equipment. This PAR provides an analysis of identified alternatives to chrome conversion coating and recommended alternatives for testing and possible implementation at HMSC.

Twenty potential alternatives to chrome conversion coatings were identified in November 1995 through literature searches and direct vendor queries. Four of these identified alternatives were classified as technically viable based on available information. These viable alternatives were Alodine 2000, Alumicoat 6788, CFCC, and Sanchem FP. The ESOH characteristics of these viable alternatives were evaluated. In addition, the key process characteristics of these alternatives were compared to those of the existing process. Later, two additional products (Alumicoat 6787 and Sol Gel) were added to the list, for a total of six nonchromate conversion coatings that were tested.
