Project Number: J-95-MF-003
Status: Completed in 1999

Technology Survey

A technology survey was conducted in 1995 to identify candidate alternative primers through literature searches, electronic database searches, Internet searches, and personal and professional contacts. Eighteen candidate alternatives were identified. Seven of the candidates: 02-W-38 (Deft Inc.); Alumazite ZDA (Tiodize Co., Inc.); EEAE136 A/B (Spraylat Corporation); PR-1875-C (Courtaulds Aerospace, Inc.); TT-P-645B Zinc Molybdate Primer (Randolph Products Company); TT-P-664D High Solids Primer (Randolph Products Company); and ZRC Cold Galvanizing Compound (ZRC Products Company) were classified as technically viable alternatives based on available information. The key material and process characteristics of the viable alternatives were compared to the selected material and process characteristics of the zinc chromate primer. The ESOH characteristics of these viable alternatives were also evaluated. As a result of this review, four of the seven viable alternative primers: Alumazite ZDA; TT-P-645B Zinc Molybdate Primer; TT-P-664D High Solids Primer and ZRC Cold Galvanizing Compound were selected for testing.
