Chromium Electroplating Alternatives for Propeller Hubs The primary objective of this project was to replace EHC plating operations with HVOF thermal spray coatings on two T-56 engine 54H60 propeller hub parts (barrel-tail shaft, part 750601-1, part #577835, and part #526385 and sleeve-lever support, part 528889 and part #557992) for dimensional restoration during repair. Tungsten Carbide Cobalt (WC/17 Co) and Tungsten Carbide Cobalt Chromium (WC/10Co4Cr) HVOF coatings and Tribaloy® 800 thermal spray coatings were considered as alternatives. The OEM was Hamilton-Sundstrand Corporation. DoD depots participating in this effort included FRC-E (fka NADEP Cherry Point) and WR-ALC. Four DoD weapon system programs were affected by this project. Test results showed that performance of HVOF coatings (WC/17Co and WC/10Co4Cr) were equal to or superior to EHC. This technology will result in the eliminaiton of hexavalent chromium mist emissions and reduced toxic waste dispoal that allows a safer working environment du ring component maintenance at Hamilton-Sundstrand, FRC-E Cherry Point and WR-ALC. Additional information about this project is available on the HCAT website. |
