Chromium Electroplating Alternatives for Propeller Hubs
Partnering with HCAT

Project Number: J-98-MF-012
Completed in 2003

JG-PP partnered with the ESTCP, the HCAT, and the OEMs to demonstrate/validate this project. The goal of ESTCP is to demonstrate and validate promising, innovative technologies/processes/materials that target the DoD's most urgent environmental needs. By use of a coordinated effort, ESTCP advances can lead to successful JG-PP technology transitions that will provide cost effective, environmental technology solutions for both the DoD and the U.S. industrial base. Visit the ESTCP website for additional information on the project's purpose, description, and benefits.

The primary objective of this project was to replace EHC plating operations with HVOF thermal spray coatings on two T-56 engine 54H60 propeller hub parts (barrel-tail shaft, part 750601-1, part #577835, and part #526385 and sleeve-lever support, part 528889 and part #557992) for dimensional restoration during repair. Tungsten Carbide Cobalt (WC/17 Co) and Tungsten Carbide Cobalt Chromium (WC/10Co4Cr) HVOF coatings and Tribaloy® 800 thermal spray coatings were considered as alternatives. The OEM was Hamilton-Sundstrand Corporation. DoD depots participating in this effort included FRC-E (fka NADEP Cherry Point) and WR-ALC. Four DoD weapon system programs were affected by this project.

Test results showed that performance of HVOF coatings (WC/17Co and WC/10Co4Cr) were equal to or superior to EHC.

This technology will result in the eliminaiton of hexavalent chromium mist emissions and reduced toxic waste dispoal that allows a safer working environment du ring component maintenance at Hamilton-Sundstrand, FRC-E Cherry Point and WR-ALC.

Additional information about this project is available on the HCAT website.
