Projects/Information Exchange

Chromate-Free Primers and Sealants
(Raytheon Electronic Systems)

Briefing of JG-PP efforts to other government programs and industry has lead to the formation of new projects that have leveraged off the former projects. One example of such leveraging can be found in the Chromate-Free Primers and Sealants Information Exchange Project. RES wished to use the knowledge gained from the Raytheon Topcoats and Primers JG-PP project to reduce the use of chromium and the VOCs in their Massachusetts manufacturing operations. This information exchange initially focused on evaluating low-VOC and nonchromate primers, nonchromate sealants, and nonchromate passivation to reduce or eliminate chromium. Low to no-VOC/high solids alternatives and powder paints are being considered for evaluation and potential testing to further reduce or eliminate VOCs at RES sites, which could benefit at least five DoD programs. As a result of the leveraging of JG-PP results from Raytheon-Texas, RES realized benefits of $18,000/year for a minimal investment of $18,000 (a one-year payback).
