Low-VOC Topcoats and Primers
(Raytheon TI Systems, Inc.)
Project Number: J-95-OC-004
Completed in 1998

The Low-VOC Topcoats and Primers JG-PP project was successfully completed in 1998. Raytheon TI Systems partnered with JG-PP to test and qualify a new formulation of paints that involves chemical agent resistant powder paint technology. The team (contractor and Government) succeeded in qualifying a non-HazMat for painting applications.

The new process was implemented using a SPI to make modifications to several contracts at one time and reduced process time by as much as three hours per piece part with a cost avoidance of at least $4 million per year. A further environmental pay-back is the reduction of paint emissions by over 40 tons per year, waste water disposal by over 40 tons per year, paint sludge disposal over 20 tons per year, and waste solvent treatment reduced by over 20 tons per year. Each of the affected engineering authorities are now changing their respective maintenance painting processes that support the Raytheon manufactured systems and components.
